Skylight Replacement in a Sunroom
The homeowner came to us with a sunroom that was in dire need of an update. The roof was composed of plastic panels that were cracked and badly leaking. Additionally, the homeowner complained that the room was virtually unusable in the summer months due to the heat inside the room.
Our suggestion was to remove the old plastic panels and add standard size flat glass skylights, while keeping the integrity of the beams that make up the ceiling. Flat glass skylights are very energy efficient and have the ability to incorporate solar powered light filtering shades which help decrease some of the heat on warm days without compromising the beautiful natural light.
To accommodate these new skylights, we had to frame in the openings between the beams. We then filled in the space on the ceiling with tongue and groove boards to match the existing look. As for the roof around the skylights, we added new decking and wrapped it with ice and water shield around the skylights for ultimate water protection.
We then shingled around the skylights with GAF Timberline HDZ Charcoal Shingles. The homeowner was not only thrilled with the new and improved sunroom, as it quickly became the most desired room in the house, but they also qualified for a 30% Federal Tax Credit!
